The Signal-Images-Physics (SigmaPhy) team directs its research towards signal and image processing and wave physics for  natural environments (oceanic, terrestrial and underground environments)  characterization and surveillance.

Scientific topics:
Underwater acoustics: active and passive observing, localization (source/target) in complex environment;
Optical and/or high resolution (special and spectral) radar remote sensing (image processing).
Transient signal imagery: seismic imagery, ultrasonic signals, fluorescence signals.

The SigmaPhy team is associated with the Grenoble Universe Sciences Observatory (l’Observatoire des Sciences de l’Univers de Grenoble (OSUG)) and collaborates with the laboratories that are part of the Observatory : Earth Sciences Institute (ISTerre), Geophysics and Glaciology Laboratory for the Environment (LGGE), The Laboratory for  Hydrology Transfers and Environment (LTHE), Center for Snow Studies (MeteoFrance), Grenoble Institute of Planetology and Astrophysics (IPAG).

The SIGMAPHY team is involved in collaborative scientific projects as :

  • Underwater acoustics and oceanic acoustic tomography;
  • Satellite imaging (hyperspectral imaging);
  • Ultrasound signal processing in industrial applications;
  • Glacier tracking by satellite and radar imaging;
  • Underground imaging and multi component antennas;
  • Analysis of transient phenomena.

The team collaborates also with a multitude of partners in industry and academics on a national and international scale (see the team's Collaborations tab).

Prix-DistinctionsXun Liu who received the IEEE Mikio Takagi Student Prize - 2019 IGARSS conference, Yokohama, Japan

Congratulations to Xun Liu who received the IEEE Mikio Takagi Student Prize during the 2019 IGARSS conference in Yokohama, Japan.  He was one of the 10 finalists selected from 305 applications and eventually received the first prize after his oral presentation. His work is a collaboration between the Beijing Institute of Technology, China and GIPSA-lab at the Institut Polytechnique de Grenoble, France. This specific part of his PhD thesis was conducted during his 12 months stay in Grenoble, under the supervision of Jocelyn Chanussot (team sigma-phy, GIPSA-Lab).
