Takayuki Ito joins the laboratory

2014-11-27

Takayuki Ito joins the laboratory in the PCMD team on December 1, 2014 in a CNRS CR position.

His research raises theoretical issues about the nature of the units and processes of spoken communication, and could lead to applications in the field of disability and learning.

Takayuki Ito studied mechanical engineering at Chiba University (PhD in 1999), working on theories of linear and nonlinear robust control before joining the "Speech Group" at NTT Communication Science Laboratories where he worked for 6 years on inter-articulators coordination mechanisms. Using both psychophysical methods, articulatory and electromyographic measurements and simulation tools, he proposed and validated a stiffness-regulation hypothesis about jaw-lips coordination. In 2005 he joined the famous Haskins Laboratories in the US. There he developed a very original work on the functional role of sensorimotor coordination in speech perception and production. This research raises theoretical issues about the nature of the units and processes of spoken communication, and could lead to applications in the field of disability and learning.

These topics will remain at the heart of his research in Gipsa-lab, with an activity in both instrumentation and measurement (including the acquisition of a Phantom measurement and disturbance system), experimentation and cognitive modeling.
