The message of the Head of Gipsa-lab

Gipsa-lab is a CNRS research unit joint with Grenoble-INP (Grenoble Institute of Technology), Université Joseph Fourier and Université Stendhal. It has agreements with INRIA, Observatoire des Sciences de l’Univers de Grenoble and Université Pierre Mendes France. With 350 people, including about 150 doctoral students, Gipsa-lab is a multidisciplinary research unit developing both basic and applied researches on complex signals and systems. Gipsa-lab is internationally recognized for the research achieved in Automatic Control, Signal and Images processing, Speech and Cognition. The research unit develops projects in the strategic areas of energy, environment, communication, intelligent systems, Life and Health and language engineering. Thanks to the research activities, Gipsa-lab maintains a constant link with the economic environment through a strong partnership with companies. Gipsa-lab staff is involved in teaching and training in the various universities and engineering schools of the Grenoble academic area (Université Grenoble Alpes).

Enhance the observation chain through the development of advanced methods

The scientific approach is based on the development of advanced methods in automatic control, speech processing, signal and images processing. These methods include the concepts of networks, control systems, modeling, analysis. One main objective is to improve the acquisition chain from the observation up to the process control, the interpretation or the enhancement of multi-component, multi-modal or multi-observation information, for a reliable and robust diagnosis.

Organisation in three departments

Research is achieved in Gipsa-lab thanks to 12 research teams organized in 3 departments:
Automatic control
Various strong partnerships exist:
- a “project team” is shared with INRIA Rhône-Alpes (NECS),
- a research team is recognized by Observatoire des Sciences de l’Univers de Grenoble (SygmaPhy).

- Gipsa-lab is an active member of Carnot Institutes: EF (Energie du Futur) and LSI (Intelligent Software and Systems)
- Gipsa-lab is also strongly involved in the Grenoble Cognition Pole, and in the Persyval-lab LABEX.

A community of 350 people

Gipsa-lab regroups 150 permanent staff including 69 faculty members and 38 full-time researchers. It also hosts visiting scholars, post-doctoral students (around twenty) and Lecturers. Staff accompanying research (38 Engineers and Technicians) belongs to transversal services. Many prospective doctoral students apply for Gipsa-lab, in which around 150 students are preparing their doctoral theses. All doctoral theses conducted in Gipsa-lab are funded; doctoral students are supervised by faculty members and researchers, among whom 50 hold the HdR (Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches). Finally, sixty trainee masters come every spring to prepare their project/internship defense in Gipsa-lab.
