One-bit quantized massive MIMO communications for 5G

Résumé :

5G communications will use several new features including a massive number of antenna, possibly 100s, at the base station to serve 10s of users. Existing MIMO systems can not be scaled-up for massive MIMO because of the overwhelming cost and energy consumption it would imply. The use of one-bit analog-to-digital (ADC) and digital-to-analog converters (DAC) has been proposed to reduce these features.

This talk focuses on the issues associated with coarse quantization in massive MIMO systems: how much degradation in terms of rate ? Is it possible to limit its impact through intelligent signal processing at low-to-medium SNRs ? We will show that the Bussgang decomposition allows to analyze linear precoders for the one-bit case. Vector perturbation allows to improve even more the performances. 

While a number of open problems remain, low-resolution quantization appears to be a promising approach to realizing massive MIMO systems with high data rates.
